Federation calls for enhanced safety measures for travelling sports teams.

Benue Buffaloes

The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has condemned the kidnapping of the Benue Buffaloes, who were rescued by the Nigeria Army after being abducted while returning from Lagos following the Ardova Handball Premier League 2025 Phase 2, which concluded last Friday.

The team, which finished ninth in the league, was kidnapped by armed men just after Otukpo in Benue State, according to the HFN. Thanks to the swift intervention of the army, the players, coaches, and officials were rescued unharmed, preventing a potentially worse outcome.

HFN President Jibril Ojih expressed deep sympathy to the entire team and Benue State Sports Ministry, describing the incident as “a sad and heartbreaking ordeal that no athlete, coach, or official should ever be subjected to.” He also commended the army for their rapid response, stating:

“I extend my deepest sympathy to the entire Benue Buffaloes team. What they went through is unimaginable. We thank God and the Nigeria Army for their safe rescue.”

Ojih called for enhanced security measures for travelling sports teams, emphasising that athlete welfare must be a national priority. He reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to supporting the Benue Buffaloes during their recovery:

“We will stand by the team and ensure they receive all the support they need as they heal and look forward to future competitions.”

The incident has highlighted the risks faced by sports teams on the road, underlining the need for robust security and rapid response measures to protect athletes and officials across Nigeria.
