Super Eagles No. 1 Begins Light Training After Injury Scare.

Stanley Nwabali

Nigeria received a timely lift ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has resumed light training, according to former Super Eagles and Moroka Swallows coach Greg Etafia.

Nwabali, who has been out with ankle and hand injuries since the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup play-off loss to DR Congo, has now progressed from gym sessions to grass training, a strong sign of recovery.

Etafia confirmed the update from South Africa, saying the 28-year-old Chippa United star is “feeling better” and still training with the squad ahead of their break later in December.

His comments offer more optimism than the earlier concerns raised by Chippa head coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi, who doubted Nwabali’s AFCON availability. Despite this, Etafia insists the goalkeeper is on track.

Nwabali’s return would be a huge boost for Nigeria as they prepare for the tournament starting December 21 in Morocco. The shot-stopper was one of the standout performers at the last AFCON, helping the team reach the final with his composure and leadership.
