Assault on referees during home defeat triggers strict sanctions.

Ekiti Queens

The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has fined Ekiti Queens N2.5 million and ordered the club to play their next three home matches at a neutral venue following the assault on match officials during their 1-0 loss to Edo Queens in Ado-Ekiti.

A viral video showed security personnel protecting referees as fans threw objects in protest of Atume Doosuur’s 67th-minute winner. After reviewing reports and footage, the NWFL found the club guilty of failure to provide adequate security, inability to control supporters, and creating an unsafe environment.

NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi condemned the incident, stressing that:

“The assault on our match officials is completely unacceptable and a gross breach of NWFL regulations. An attack on a referee is an attack on the league itself.”

The sanctions serve as a deterrent, reinforcing the league’s commitment to safety, professionalism, and integrity.

Meanwhile, match-day three concluded with Adamawa Queens and FC Robo topping their respective groups.
