Former England striker recounts the intense backlash to his move from Everton.

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he received death threats after leaving Everton to join Manchester United in 2004. The then-18-year-old moved to Old Trafford in a £27m deal, rejecting a record contract from Everton, a decision that angered many Toffees fans.

Rooney said the backlash became extreme, with his parents’ home and his girlfriend’s home vandalised and spray-painted. Despite the hostility, he insisted he stayed mentally strong and focused on his ambitions, saying he had to be “selfish” to make the move that shaped his career.

Speaking on BBC Sport’s Wayne Rooney Show, the former England striker added that the pressure on young players is even greater today due to social media, highlighting the challenges faced by his 16-year-old son Kai, who is currently in Manchester United’s academy.

Rooney stressed the importance of strong support systems for young footballers, noting that players are judged constantly and need the right people around them to stay grounded.
