Ex-USWNT star questions meaning behind team’s message.

Megan Rapinoe

Former United States women’s national team icon Megan Rapinoe has criticised the country’s newly revealed slogan for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, arguing that the phrase sends the wrong message about belief and confidence.

The campaign slogan “Never Chase Reality” was unveiled by U.S. Soccer as part of a promotional rollout, sparking immediate debate among fans, players and analysts.

Speaking on the latest episode of her podcast, “A Touch More,” alongside Sue Bird and Katie Nolan, Rapinoe admitted she was puzzled and unimpressed by the message.

What Rapinoe Said

Rapinoe questioned whether the slogan communicated something negative about the mindset of the U.S. national team:

“I was like, guys, I don’t think it’s saying what you think it’s saying,” she said.

The former forward suggested the message could be interpreted as lacking belief, adding:

“To me, it said like you already think you’re not good. So, I didn’t like that.”

Instead, Rapinoe said she would have preferred something more straightforward and inspiring, such as:

“Dream big.”

U.S. Soccer’s Response

The slogan launched alongside a 90–second promotional video narrated by actor Marcello Hernandez, who defended the message and broader aim of the campaign.

Hernandez explained that the slogan represents ambition and courage rather than denial:

“Never chasing reality means ignoring the odds and daring to dream.”

He said the campaign is designed to inspire fans and players by connecting the team’s journey to the American dream.
