New yearly competition starts in 2029, filling gap as AFCON shifts to four-year cycle after 2028.

Major Overhaul for African National Team Football

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially launched the African Nations League, a new annual competition for senior national teams set to begin in 2029.

This exciting development ensures Africa hosts a world-class senior national team event every year, featuring the continent’s top players from leading global leagues.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe highlighted the reforms: “We are excited about the new changes that will make African Senior National Team Competitions amongst the best in the World.”

The Nations League aims to:

  • Provide consistent high-quality matches.
  • Increase player exposure and development.
  • Boost fan engagement.
  • Generate sustainable revenue.
  • Better synchronize with the FIFA calendar, reducing club-national team conflicts.

The tournament will reportedly use a regional format across September, October, and November windows to minimize travel and costs while maximizing competitiveness.

Tied to AFCON Schedule Change

The launch comes alongside the shift of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a four-year cycle after the 2028 edition (with 2027 proceeding as planned).

No senior competitions will occur in World Cup years, allowing qualified teams full focus.

Additional benefits include increased prize money for club competitions and annual distributions to member associations.

A bold step by CAF to elevate African football’s global standing and structure.
