Jackson Stars as Senegal Cruise in Tangier

Senegal launched their AFCON 2025 title defense with a commanding 3-0 victory over Botswana in their Group D opener at the Grand Stade de Tangier on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

Bayern Munich striker Nicolas Jackson stole the show with a brace, breaking Botswana’s resistance just before halftime (40′) with a clinical finish from Ismail Jakobs‘ low cross.

He doubled the lead shortly after the hour mark (58′), finishing calmly after a through ball from Ismaïla Sarr.

Substitute Cherif Ndiaye sealed the rout late on, sweeping home from a cross to complete a dominant performance.

Senegal overwhelmed the Zebras with 28 shots on goal, while Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko made several fine saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

The 2021 champions top Group D on goal difference ahead of DR Congo (1-0 winners over Benin earlier).

Botswana, in their second AFCON appearance, remain winless at the finals but showed resilience in their debut under the lights.

Statement Win for Teranga Lions
