Mahrez Leads Algeria to Convincing Victory

Algeria began their AFCON 2025 campaign with a dominant 3-0 victory over Sudan in their Group E opener at the Stade de Marrakesh on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

Captain Riyad Mahrez was the star, scoring a brace to set the Desert Foxes on their way.

The Al-Ahli winger opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a trademark curling effort into the far corner after cutting inside from the right.

He doubled the lead just before halftime (42′) from the penalty spot after a foul in the box.

Baghdad Bounedjah sealed the win in the second half (~65′), heading home from a precise cross to make it 3-0.

Algeria controlled the game with superior possession and created numerous chances, while Sudan struggled to threaten Anthony Mandrea‘s goal.

Coach Vladimir Petković‘s side looked sharp and organized, sending a statement in a group also featuring Ghana and Madagascar.

Sudan, making their first AFCON appearance since 1976, showed spirit but were outclassed by the 2019 champions.
