Amad Diallo scores the winner for Ivory Coast in AFCON 2025

Elephants Grind Out Opening Win

Ivory Coast kicked off their AFCON 2025 title defense with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Mozambique in their Group F opener at the Stade de Marrakesh on Tuesday, December 24, 2025.

The Elephants dominated possession and created chances but were frustrated in a goalless first half, with Mozambique’s goalkeeper Ernan making key saves.

The breakthrough came just four minutes into the second half when Franck Kessié headed down a cross, allowing Manchester United winger Amad Diallo to volley home a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Ivory Coast threatened a second, with Ghislain Konan and substitutes like Vakoun Bayo coming close, but Mozambique pushed late and nearly equalized.

The defending champions held firm to claim three points in Group F, which also includes Cameroon and Gabon.

Mozambique, still seeking their first AFCON win, showed discipline and can take positives into upcoming fixtures.
