Zidane’s Heartfelt Choice for Algeria

Rising Algerian talent Akli Zidane has revealed that his grandfather was the decisive influence in his choice to represent Algeria at international level instead of France.

The 20-year-old midfielder, currently making waves in European football, was eligible for both nations but opted for the Desert Foxes, a decision rooted in family heritage.

In an emotional interview ahead of AFCON 2025, Zidane explained: “My grandfather convinced me to play for Algeria. He always spoke to me about our roots, our history, and what it means to wear the green and white.”

The youngster, who progressed through French youth systems, felt a deep connection to Algeria through family stories and values passed down.

Zidane has since integrated into Algeria’s senior setup under coach Vladimir Petković, earning caps and praise for his technical ability and vision.

His commitment adds to Algeria’s exciting young core as they chase a third AFCON title in Morocco.
