Frank Onyeka Reflects on Defensive Lapses Despite Super Eagles’ 3-2 Triumph Over Tunisia at AFCON 2025.

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has expressed frustration over the two late goals conceded in Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 victory against Tunisia in their second Group C match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking after the game on December 27, 2025, in Fes, Onyeka highlighted defensive vulnerabilities: “I was disappointed that the Tunisians got the two goals especially the penalty and set piece, these are areas we need to do well.”

Despite cruising to a 3-0 lead with goals from Victor Osimhen (44′), captain Wilfred Ndidi (50′), and Ademola Lookman (67′), Nigeria allowed Tunisia back into the contest. Montassar Talbi headed in from a set piece in the 74th minute, before a controversial late penalty, converted by Ali Abdi after Bright Osayi-Samuel‘s handball—made it 3-2 with just minutes remaining.

Onyeka, who was substituted in the 79th minute, remained positive about the overall display: “I think the performance was good, we tried to follow the instructions of the coach.”

Looking ahead to the final group game against Uganda on Tuesday, December 30, also in Fes, he added: “We will go into the final game with Uganda with the same mindset. The way we played against Tunisia is the same way we will play against Uganda.”

The win secured Nigeria’s progression to the Round of 16 with maximum points from two games, showcasing their attacking threat under coach Eric Chelle while exposing areas for refinement in defense.

As the three-time champions aim for glory, Onyeka’s honest assessment underscores the team’s determination to tighten up. Fly Eagles Fly.
