British-Nigerian Boxer Recuperating at Home Following Fatal Accident.

Anthony Joshua discharged hospital crash

Former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital and is now recuperating at home, the governments of Ogun and Lagos states confirmed in a joint statement on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

The 36-year-old British-Nigerian boxer was involved in a fatal road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, December 29, when his Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck. The crash tragically claimed the lives of two close associates and team members, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami (both foreign nationals).

The statement noted: “Anthony Joshua was discharged… late this afternoon. Although heavy-hearted and deeply affected by the loss of his two close friends, he was certified clinically fit and will continue his recuperation from home.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay final respects as preparations were made for the repatriation of the deceased.

Governors Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) extended renewed condolences to the bereaved families, thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support, and commended medical staff at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their care.

The outpouring of love from Nigerians and global well-wishers continues. Speedy and full recovery, AJ – strength to his family and the loved ones of the departed.
