Cheetahs Coach Eyes Upset in Round of 16 Clash Against Pharaohs.

Gernot Rohr

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has cautioned Egypt against underestimating his side ahead of their AFCON 2025 Round of 16 showdown next week.

The Cheetahs – who secured their historic first-ever AFCON win in the group stage – face the seven-time champions, led by stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, in a David-vs-Goliath encounter scheduled for January 5 or 6, 2026 (exact date/venue pending final draw).

Rohr, the experienced German tactician, acknowledged Egypt’s superiority but highlighted Benin’s underdog potential:
“We are now in the Nations Cup round of 16, and we will face Egypt. It will be a tough game against a great team. We know Egypt’s stars. But we also know the other players, not just Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. The match will be very difficult for us, but as the underdogs, we still have our chances.”

Benin advanced with a gritty campaign, claiming one victory and enough points to progress – now aiming for a second quarter-final appearance in their history.

Egypt topped their group unbeaten, resting key players in the final match. Hossam Hassan’s Pharaohs are heavy favourites, but Rohr’s pragmatic approach and tactical nous could make it competitive.
