Federation Acts Swiftly Following Penalty Shootout Exit to Mali.

Sami Trabelsi

Tunisia’s football supporters woke up to big news on January 5, 2026. The Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) announced they have parted ways with head coach Sami Trabelsi. This comes right after the team’s painful exit from the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco.

The Carthage Eagles crashed out in the Round of 16, losing 3-2 on penalties to Mali after a 1-1 draw in extra time. Tunisia had taken a late lead while Mali were down to 10 players, only to concede a stoppage-time penalty that forced the shootout.

Trabelsi, aged 57, was in his second spell as coach. He faced criticism despite guiding the team to second place in Group C. The group stage saw a 3-1 win over Uganda, a 3-2 loss to Nigeria, and a 1-1 draw with Tanzania.

This early exit marks the sixth time in eight AFCON tournaments that Tunisia have failed to reach the quarter-finals. Their only title remains the 2004 win on home soil.

The FTF issued a brief statement: “The Executive Committee has decided to end the contractual relationship by mutual agreement with the entire technical staff.”

After the Mali match, Trabelsi took full responsibility. He praised his players’ efforts but called the result devastating.

Hannibal Mejbri

Star player Hannibal Mejbri didn’t hold back. The midfielder demanded a complete overhaul of Tunisian football to close the gap with Africa’s elite teams.

Many fans and experts agree change is needed at all levels.

Looking ahead, Tunisia must quickly appoint a new coach for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Possible names include past managers like Jalel Kadri or Mondher Kebaier, veteran Faouzi Benzarti, or even a foreign expert.

The Carthage Eagles will hope this shake-up leads to a brighter future.
