No Contract Renewal Planned for Injury-Hit Austrian Defender.

David Alaba Real Madrid contract

Real Madrid have no plans to extend David Alaba‘s contract, which expires in June 2026, paving the way for the Austrian defender’s departure as a free agent at the end of the 2025/26 season.

The 33-year-old, who joined Los Blancos on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in 2021, has been plagued by injuries in recent years. A serious ACL tear in December 2023 sidelined him for much of the subsequent seasons, followed by recurring calf and muscle issues that have limited his availability.

Reliable sources, including transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, confirm the club views Alaba’s cycle as complete. High wages – reportedly around €10-12 million net per season – combined with his fitness struggles and the emergence of younger defenders have led to this decision.

Alaba has contributed significantly when fit, helping Real Madrid to multiple titles, but the focus now shifts to long-term planning with prospects like Dean Huijsen and Raúl Asencio.

From January 1, 2026, Alaba will be free to negotiate with other clubs. Interest from Galatasaray, Saudi Pro League sides, and potentially Serie A teams has been reported, though the veteran has previously expressed a desire to fulfill his current deal.

This development aligns with Real Madrid’s strategy of rejuvenating the squad under manager Xabi Alonso.
