Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha has urged the current Super Eagles squad to address their chronic inconsistency if they are to succeed at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking to RG, the former Nigeria captain reflected on the painful 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the team win only four of ten matches, draw five times (including at home to Lesotho and Zimbabwe), and suffer a historic defeat to Benin Republic before losing the playoff final on penalties to DR Congo.

“We all know football is not an easy game, but what I think they should improve on is to be more consistent,” Okocha said.
“They need to stick to winning with top performance in every game.”

The three-time African champions reached the final of AFCON 2023 and will be expected to challenge strongly again. Nigeria are drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, with their opening match against Tanzania on December 23.

Okocha’s warning comes at a critical time as Eric Chelle’s side looks to restore national pride after missing a second consecutive World Cup.
