Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town have confirmed the departure of former Flying Eagles invitee Abube Onuchukwu as part of their retained and released list ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The Tractor Boys announced decisions on several players’ futures following their promotion to the Premier League, with a number of Nigerian players affected by the club’s squad reshuffle.
Onuchukwu Departs After Two Years at Ipswich
Abube Onuchukwu leaves Ipswich Town two years after joining the club from Aston Villa.
The highly-rated midfielder was unable to make a senior appearance for the Suffolk club but remained an important figure at academy level, featuring regularly in both the Premier League 2 and the Premier League Cup.
Known for his energy and box-to-box style of play, the 20-year-old was regarded as one of the promising talents within the club’s development setup.
Valuable Loan Experience
In search of regular first-team football, Onuchukwu spent parts of last season on loan at several non-league clubs.
The midfielder represented Chelmsford City, Billericay Town, and Wingate & Finchley, gaining valuable senior experience that could prove beneficial as he searches for the next step in his career.
Despite his departure from Ipswich, the former Flying Eagles invitee remains a player with considerable potential and will be hoping to secure a new opportunity in England or elsewhere in Europe.
Other Nigerian Players Also Released
Ipswich Town also confirmed the departures of Nigerian forwards Jackson Nsofor and Will Unadike.
Nsofor spent part of last season on loan at Cambridge City, while Unadike gained senior experience during loan spells with Lowestoft Town and Heybridge Swifts.
The club’s retained and released list reflects preparations for the challenges of Premier League football following their promotion.
Positive News for Chuba Akpom and Mendel-Idowu
There was, however, positive news for other players of Nigerian heritage at the club.
Ipswich Town confirmed the permanent signing of Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom from Ajax Amsterdam after a successful loan spell.
The striker made 31 appearances across all competitions and scored two goals during his time with the club.
Meanwhile, Tudor Mendel-Idowu has been retained after Ipswich exercised the option to extend his contract.
Lagos-born Republic of Ireland international Chiedozie Ogbene has also returned to the club following his season-long loan spell at Sheffield United.
What’s Next for Onuchukwu?
Being released by a Premier League club does not necessarily signal the end of a young player’s ambitions.
Many Nigerian footballers have rebuilt their careers after leaving English academies and gone on to enjoy successful professional careers.
At just 20 years of age, Onuchukwu still has time on his side and the experience gained at Ipswich Town and during his loan spells could open doors to new opportunities.
Analysis
Abube Onuchukwu’s departure marks the end of an important chapter in his development, but it could also represent the beginning of a new opportunity.
The midfielder has gained valuable experience within one of England’s respected academy systems and has already tasted senior football through his loan spells.
For Ipswich Town, the decision reflects the realities of preparing for life in the Premier League, where clubs often streamline their squads to meet the demands of top-flight football.
For Onuchukwu, the focus will now shift to finding the right environment to continue his development and fulfil the potential that once earned him recognition from Nigeria’s youth national team setup.
