Premier League and La Liga sides enquire about German goalkeeper amid reduced role at Camp Nou.

Marc-André ter Stegen

Ter Stegen Linked with January Exit

Aston Villa and Girona are among the clubs showing interest in a loan move for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, according to reports from December 2025.

The 33-year-old German international has fallen down the pecking order at Barça under Hansi Flick, with Joan García established as first choice and Wojciech Szczęsny as backup.

Ter Stegen, who recently returned from a long-term back injury, is keen on regular playing time to secure his spot as Germany’s No. 1 for the 2026 World Cup.

Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery, have enquired due to concerns over Emiliano Martínez‘s fitness and form. The Argentine has faced back issues and lost the captaincy.

Girona, facing a goalkeeping crisis with Dominik Livaković expected to depart, have also sounded out the situation – though a move to a La Liga rival seems unlikely.

Other interest has come from clubs in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and reportedly Tottenham, but a high-level European loan is preferred.

Barcelona are open to a temporary exit to manage wages and squad dynamics, with Ter Stegen’s contract running until 2028.
