Legendary Boss Returns for Second Interim Spell After Wilfried Nancy’s Shock Sacking.

Martin O’Neill Celtic manager

Celtic Football Club made a dramatic U-turn on January 5, 2026, reappointing club legend Martin O’Neill as manager until the end of the season, mere hours after sacking Wilfried Nancy.

The 73-year-old Northern Irishman, who previously managed the Hoops to seven trophies between 2000 and 2005, steps back into the dugout for a second interim stint this campaign.

O’Neill had successfully steadied the ship earlier in the season, winning seven of eight games after Brendan Rodgers’ departure in October. He stepped aside in December for Nancy’s arrival but returns now amid fan protests and poor results.

In an official club statement: “Celtic Football Club can confirm that Martin O’Neill will be joining the club as manager until the end of this season.”

O’Neill will be supported by assistants Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham, alongside Stephen McManus joining existing coaches Gavin Strachan, Stevie Woods, and Greg Wallace.

The move follows Nancy’s disastrous 33-day reign – the shortest in Celtic history – which saw just two wins from eight matches and six defeats, culminating in a 3-1 home loss to Rangers that sparked protests outside Celtic Park.

Celtic currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership, six points behind leaders Hearts.

O’Neill expressed his delight: “I am really pleased, in fact, very honoured to be asked back to manage the team again and I am looking forward to getting back to work again with the players.”

This appointment offers stability as the club searches for a permanent solution, with O’Neill’s proven track record providing hope for a title challenge.
