22-Year-Old Defensive Midfielder Signs Long-Term Contract, Bringing Physicality and European Experience to Colorado.

Hamzat Ojediran Joins MLS Side Colorado Rapids

In a significant boost to their midfield, Major League Soccer club Colorado Rapids have officially confirmed the acquisition of promising Nigerian midfielder Hamzat Ojediran from French Ligue 1 side RC Lens.

The 22-year-old, born in Lagos, has penned a contract running through the 2028-29 MLS season, with club options for 2029-30 and 2030-31. Ojediran will occupy an international roster spot and is set to link up with his new teammates once his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa are secured.

A former standout with Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Ojediran spent the last two seasons at RC Lens, where he made 17 appearances in Ligue 1 and scored one goal, also featuring for the club’s reserve side.

Colorado Rapids President Pádraig Smith expressed enthusiasm about the new arrival: “We’re excited to bring a player of Hamzat’s caliber into our group. He brings outstanding physical presence, defensive discipline and explosiveness to our midfield. He’s an ideal fit for Matt’s system and is motivated and hungry to continue his own development and contribute to our success.”

Head Coach Matt Wells echoed similar praise: “Hamzat is a brilliant addition to the squad. He has the elite mentality, technical ability and physicality we need in order to compete at the highest level. He brings excellent experience of European football and his identity of breaking up play and stopping opposition counter-attacks will help us impose our dominant style. Throughout our discussions, it was clear he had a winning mentality and we believe he’ll be a great fit.”

This transfer marks an exciting new chapter for the young defensive midfielder as he transitions to MLS ahead of the 2026 season, which kicks off for the Rapids on February 22 against Seattle Sounders FC.

Ojediran’s arrival adds depth and quality to Colorado’s engine room, with his blend of aggression, ball-winning ability, and experience from one of Europe’s top leagues poised to make an immediate impact.
