Europa League

Europa League

League History The UEFA Europa League, Europe’s second-tier club football competition, began in 1971 as the UEFA Cup, replacing the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Rebranded as the Europa League in 2009, it features teams that finish just below their domestic league’s top spots or drop from the Champions League. Sevilla FC is the most successful club, winning the title seven times, including four in the last decade. Other notable winners include Liverpool, Atlético Madrid, and Manchester United. The competition has seen memorable moments like Fulham’s improbable 2010 final run and Villarreal’s 2021 penalty shootout victory over Manchester United. As of 2025, the Europa League includes 36 teams in a single-league format, aligning with UEFA’s revamped competitions, with Anderlecht as the reigning champions after their 2024 win. It remains a vibrant stage for emerging clubs and dramatic football.
