British Heavyweight Star in Hospital After Collision on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Anthony Joshua car crash Nigeria

Two-time former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a tragic road traffic accident on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the notorious Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun/Sagamu in Ogun State, Nigeria.

The 36-year-old British-Nigerian boxer, who was visiting his ancestral home after his recent knockout victory over Jake Paul on December 19, was travelling in a black Lexus SUV (registration KRD 850 HN) as part of a two-vehicle convoy when it collided with a stationary truck around 11am local time.

According to statements from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Police, the crash resulted in two fatalities on the spot – reportedly the passenger beside the driver and another occupant. Joshua, seated in the back, sustained minor injuries and was rescued alive, receiving immediate medical attention at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Eyewitness accounts describe Joshua appearing dazed and in pain after being helped from the wreckage. The FRSC noted the Lexus was reportedly travelling at speed during an overtaking manoeuvre, leading to loss of control. The site was cordoned off for investigation.

Promoter Eddie Hearn stated: “We are trying to contact Anthony… thankfully he appears okay from what I have seen in the images.” No official comment has come from Joshua’s camp yet, but police have extended condolences to the families of the deceased and launched a full probe.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is infamous for high accident rates. Joshua, fresh off his dominant win in Miami, was enjoying downtime in Nigeria. Fans worldwide have sent messages of support and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Get well soon, AJ. Thoughts with the victims’ families. 🥊🇳🇬🇬🇧
