Reece James and Joao Pedro goals secure vital point for Blues in thrilling Premier League clash at St James’ Park.

Dramatic Comeback at St James’ Park

Chelsea produced a resilient second-half performance to salvage a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in a pulsating Premier League encounter on December 20, 2025.

The Blues found themselves 2-0 down at halftime after Nick Woltemade struck twice for the hosts. The German forward opened the scoring in the 4th minute, slotting home from close range after Robert Sanchez saved Anthony Gordon’s initial effort.

Woltemade doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 20th minute, poking in Gordon’s cross following a VAR check that confirmed he was onside.

Chelsea emerged transformed after the break. Captain Reece James pulled one back in the 49th minute with a beautifully curled free-kick that nestled into the top corner.

The equalizer arrived in the 66th minute when Joao Pedro outmuscled Malick Thiaw, shrugged off a challenge, and fired low past Aaron Ramsdale.

Newcastle felt aggrieved after a strong penalty appeal was waved away when Trevoh Chalobah appeared to foul Gordon, but VAR upheld the on-field decision.

Despite late pressure from both sides, the spoils were shared in what many called an early contender for game of the season.

The result keeps Chelsea in fourth place, halting a run of just one win in five league games and easing pressure on manager Enzo Maresca.

Newcastle, hampered by defensive injuries, remain in the mid-table mix but will rue dropping points from a winning position.
