Chelle Keeps Eyes on the Prize

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has brushed aside questions about his contract status, emphasizing that his sole priority is securing a winning start at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Monday, December 22, 2025, ahead of Nigeria’s Group C opener against Tanzania, Chelle made it clear that contract talks are off the table during the tournament.

“For this game, we are very happy to be here. It is a big game because it is our first match, and the first game is always very important. We are pleased to be playing here in Fez, and of course, we are working very hard to win this match,” Chelle said.

The French tactician revealed his mindset since taking the job: “Since I started this job, I have always approached it as if it could end after each match. Right now, my focus is entirely on the AFCON, my players, and the officials. After the tournament, by God’s grace, when we have reason to smile, we can then talk about my contract. This is not the best time for such questions.”

Chelle also called on the media to shift attention: “I want us, the media, to ask questions about the players, the tournament, and the team as a whole, not about my contract.”

Crucial Opener Awaits

The three-time African champions face Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23, at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, with kick-off at 6:30 pm Nigerian time.

Later the same evening, Tunisia and Uganda complete the Group C double-header at the same venue.

A positive result is vital for Nigeria’s ambitions of a fourth AFCON title, and Chelle’s laser focus sets the tone for the campaign.
