Mostafa Mohamed’s second-half strike secures victory for Pharaohs in Cairo tune-up.

Egypt VS Nigeria

Egypt claimed a 2–1 win over Nigeria in a pre-Africa Cup of Nations friendly on Tuesday in Cairo, boosting confidence ahead of the tournament in Morocco.

The hosts took the lead in the 29th minute when Mahmoud Saber tapped in from close range after a perfect cross from Zizo, who repeatedly troubled the Super Eagles’ defence down the right flank.

Nigeria struggled to create rhythm but came close to an equalizer when Paul Onuachu’s long ball nearly resulted in an own goal by Yasser Ibrahim, forcing a sharp save from goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

The Super Eagles finally equalized shortly after halftime. A free kick from Zaidu Sanusi was fumbled by El Shenawy, allowing Chidozie Awaziem to react quickest and head in from close range.

Egypt regained the lead in the second half through Mostafa Mohamed, who finished clinically inside the area following another incisive move involving Zizo.

Despite several attempts, Nigeria could not respond, as Egypt held on to secure the win, capping a promising final tune-up before AFCON 2025.

  • Egypt begin their AFCON campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday.
  • Nigeria open against Tanzania a day later.
