Gernot Rohr

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has voiced his support for Nigeria’s Super Eagles as they aim to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the African playoffs.

Despite leading Benin to a historic 1-0 win over Nigeria during the qualifiers, Rohr’s team suffered a 4-0 defeat to the Super Eagles in their final Group C match in Uyo. Now, as one of the four best third-placed teams, Nigeria face a playoff path against Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo for Africa’s sole remaining ticket.

Speaking on Brila FM, Rohr praised the quality of his former team, which he guided to the 2018 World Cup and a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. “Super Eagles have so many high-level players and strikers. We tried against them, but we could not do it,” he said. “We beat them in the qualifiers, and it’s a result we were proud of, but I will be supporting the Super Eagles in the playoffs.”

Nigeria, under Eric Chelle, will first face Gabon in the semi-final. A victory would set up a final against either Cameroon or DR Congo. With Rohr’s endorsement and a talented squad, the Super Eagles are poised to fight for their World Cup dream.
