Ex-Bayern Munich star admits language learning plans have stalled since joining Vancouver Whitecaps.

Thomas Müller

Former Bayern Munich striker Thomas Müller has hilariously admitted that his efforts to improve his English have taken a back seat since joining Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer.

After 25 years with Bayern Munich, Müller made the switch to Canada in August, hoping to sharpen his English and settle into life in North America. But speaking to the Whitecaps’ website, the German icon revealed that motivation hasn’t been on his side.

Müller said he arrived with good intentions to polish his language skills using an app, but quickly found himself slacking.

“I had firmly intended to actively work on my English skills… but I caught myself letting the days rush by. I had enough time — I’m simply too lazy,” he joked.

The 35-year-old added that although he still cracks jokes in English, his grammar slips make them “even stranger than at home.”

Despite the language barrier, Müller remains a fan favourite, both for his personality and his football.
