Real Madrid Confirm Star Forward Will Miss Entire Tournament in Saudi Arabia.

Kylian Mbappé

Real Madrid have dealt a major blow to their hopes of early silverware in 2026, confirming on January 6 that Kylian Mbappé has been excluded from the squad for the Spanish Super Cup due to injury.

The 27-year-old French captain, who has been sensational this season with over 29 goals across all competitions, is suffering from a sprained left knee. The issue, which originated from a match against Celta Vigo in December, flared up again in training late last year.

Club medical staff diagnosed the sprain on December 31, and Real Madrid have adopted a cautious “zero risk” policy, ensuring Mbappé remains in Madrid for recovery rather than travelling to Jeddah.

This means the talisman will miss the semi-final against Atlético Madrid on January 8 and any potential final on January 11.

There is a positive note for manager Xabi Alonso, as Trent Alexander-Arnold returns to the squad after recovering from a thigh injury.

Mbappé had been playing through discomfort in recent weeks, contributing decisively despite not being fully fit. The decision prioritises his long-term health ahead of a busy schedule.

Expected recovery time is around three weeks, with a potential return in late January.

Real Madrid will rely on the likes of Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, and emerging talents to fill the void in Saudi Arabia.
