Former Nigeria striker backs Osimhen for captaincy, praises his leadership, hunger, and influence.

Odion Ighalo

Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo believes Victor Osimhen, not Wilfred Ndidi should wear the captain’s armband for Nigeria.

Speaking to Sportblits.com, Ighalo argued that Osimhen’s personality, passion, and influence make him the ideal leader for the national team.

“Osimhen is doing well and he has the balls to demand what the team wants,” Ighalo said.

While he respects Ndidi, Ighalo described him as a calm, quiet figure, someone who prefers to lead by example rather than voice. Osimhen, he says, brings something different.

“Osimhen is outspoken, he will speak on behalf of the team. He will ginger the boys, fight for them, and talk to whoever he needs to talk to.”

Ighalo also highlighted the pressure captains face, noting that Osimhen’s status as the team’s biggest star gives him leverage.

“When you’re doing well, you have the power to demand. They won’t look down on him.”

The debate adds another chapter to Nigeria’s leadership conversation as AFCON 2025 approaches.
