Wasi Adeshina

Historic Night for Nigerian MMA in Benin

Nigerian fighter Wasi Adeshina made history on December 20, 2025, becoming the inaugural PFL Africa featherweight champion with a second-round technical knockout victory over Cameroon’s Alain Majorique at the Sofitel Dome in Cotonou, Benin.

The win, due to a severe cut over Majorique’s eye leading to a doctor’s stoppage at 3:07 of round two, earned Adeshina the prestigious belt and $100,000 prize money.

An emotional Adeshina said post-fight: “I am very emotional. We thank God, I am very humble and just happy to make Nigeria proud. It’s been a journey, and everyone at home in Nigeria can celebrate with me.”

Strong Showing from Nigerian Fighters

Three out of four Nigerians on the card emerged victorious:

  • Juliet Ukah delivered a first-round knockout over Egypt’s Maryam Gaber in the Women’s Strawweight Showcase.
  • Cornel Thompson outpointed local favorite Jean Do Santos via unanimous decision in the Lightweight Showcase.

Only Miracle Andrew fell short, losing a decision to Zambia’s Shelda Chipito in another Women’s Strawweight bout.

The inaugural PFL Africa Finals featured 12 fights, including four championship bouts where each winner claimed $100,000.

PFL Africa‘s General Manager Elias Schulze praised the talent: “Many of these fighters can go head-to-head with fighters from the United States or Europe… The level proves Africa has world-class athletes ready to shine globally.”

A landmark event marking the rise of African MMA on the international stage.
