Black Satellites of Ghana head coach Maxwell Konadu has declared that his side is fully motivated ahead of their opening fixture against Nigeria’s Flying Eagles in the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship qualifiers, Sportblits.com reports.
The highly anticipated encounter will take place at the Lycée Scientifique Stadium, where two of West Africa’s biggest football rivals will renew hostilities in a match expected to set the tone for the tournament.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Konadu admitted that facing Nigeria always brings extra motivation and intensity, given the long-standing rivalry between the two neighbouring nations.
Ghana Seeking Revenge Against Flying Eagles
The opening fixture also presents Ghana with an opportunity to avenge their 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in the final of the previous WAFU B U-20 Championship held in Lomé, Togo.
Addressing journalists during Sunday’s pre-match press conference, as quoted by Ghana Football Association (GFA), Konadu said both teams understand the significance of the rivalry and believes the better side will emerge victorious.
“We’re motivated because it’s Nigeria, and they will also be motivated because they are playing Ghana. Matches between these two nations—we all know what they mean. I think the best team will carry the day.”

Maxwell Konadu Confident in Ghana’s Preparation
Despite the pressure surrounding the fixture, Maxwell Konadu expressed confidence that his players are fully prepared after an encouraging build-up to the tournament.
According to the Ghana coach, the Black Satellites played several friendly matches before travelling for the competition, giving the squad valuable match fitness and tactical preparation.
“I think we’ve prepared enough. The boys are ready. We played a couple of friendly games before coming here and I think the boys are ready for the impending assignment ahead of us.”
The coach believes the team’s preparation has equipped the players with the confidence needed to compete against one of Africa’s strongest youth teams.
Ghana’s Tactical Plan Against Nigeria
Konadu also revealed that Ghana have studied Nigeria’s style of play and are aware of the Flying Eagles’ physical and aggressive approach.
Rather than engaging Nigeria in a physical contest, the Black Satellites intend to rely on tactical discipline, intelligent ball circulation, and composure in possession.
“Nigeria has always been aggressive, which we’re aware of. Let’s see how our boys respond to that. Maybe we have to circulate the ball a bit. We’ll try to think before they act, and I think that will be one of the key areas we have to exploit.”
His comments suggest Ghana will focus on controlling possession and exploiting spaces rather than matching Nigeria’s intensity.
Ghana Eye Upset Over Defending Champions
Nigeria head into the tournament as the defending champions, adding further significance to the opening encounter.
While acknowledging the quality of the Flying Eagles, Maxwell Konadu insisted his players are determined to dethrone the reigning champions and begin their campaign with a statement victory.
“We know Nigeria are the defending champions and we have to work even harder to dethrone them.”
