Swedish champions Malmö FF have officially explained why Emmanuel Ekong’s proposed transfer away from the club failed to materialise, confirming that concerns over a pre-existing knee injury led to the collapse of the deal, Sportblits.com reports.
The 24-year-old Nigeria-eligible forward had been strongly linked with a move away from Malmö during the summer transfer window, with widespread reports indicating that Croatian giants Hajduk Split were close to completing his signing.
However, what initially appeared to be a straightforward transfer unexpectedly broke down after the buying club reportedly raised concerns during the mandatory medical examination.
While Malmö did not officially identify the interested club, the Swedish champions acknowledged that the transfer was cancelled after medical tests highlighted an injury Ekong had sustained earlier this year.
Medical examination uncovered previous knee injury
In an official squad update published on the club’s website, Malmö explained that Ekong suffered a meniscus injury to his right knee in March.
Following consultations between the club’s medical department and the player, Malmö initially decided against surgery, believing rehabilitation offered the best path to recovery.
The Nigerian-eligible attacker responded well to treatment and completed his rehabilitation programme successfully.
According to the club, Ekong had been fully available for selection since the beginning of May and had resumed both first-team training and competitive matches.

Malmö confirm surgery decision
Following the collapse of the move, Malmö have now changed their treatment plan for the attacker.

The club said:
“In connection with a medical examination by a foreign club, this already known injury was noted and the club therefore refused a transfer.
“In light of these new circumstances, we have decided, in consultation with Emmanuel, to plan for knee surgery.”
