South Korean top-flight club Gangwon FC have officially announced the signing of Nigerian forward Jesse Sekidika.
The 29-year-old joins the K League side on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract with Azerbaijani club Sabah FK on June 30, 2026. While Gangwon FC have not disclosed the length of the agreement, the move marks another chapter in the well-travelled career of the versatile attacker.
New Challenge in South Korea
Sekidika arrives in South Korea with a wealth of experience gained across several European leagues.
The Nigerian winger leaves Sabah FK after a highly successful spell in Azerbaijan, where he played a key role in one of the club’s most successful periods. During the 2025/26 season, he helped Sabah secure the domestic league and cup double, having also lifted the national cup in the previous campaign.
Across all competitions, the former Galatasaray player registered 21 goals and 10 assists in 107 appearances for Sabah, underlining his importance to the club.
From Benfica to Galatasaray
Sekidika’s football journey has taken him across several countries and leagues.
The Nigerian spent part of his formative years in the youth setup of Portuguese giants Benfica before continuing his development elsewhere in Europe. He later earned a move to Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray, becoming one of several Nigerian players to feature for the Istanbul-based club.
Over the years, he has represented numerous clubs, including Oeiras, Eskişehirspor, Konyaspor, OH Leuven, Eyüpspor and Ümraniyespor.
The forward also enjoyed success earlier in his career, winning the Serbian second division title with Napredak Kruševac during the 2015/16 campaign.
Attacking Quality and Experience
Known for his pace, direct running and technical ability, Sekidika is capable of operating on either wing or in more advanced attacking positions.
His explosive acceleration, dribbling skills and powerful right foot have made him a difficult player for defenders to contain throughout his career.
Gangwon FC will be hoping the Nigerian can add creativity and goals to their attacking options as they look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
Another Nigerian in Asian Football
Sekidika’s move also highlights the growing presence of Nigerian footballers in Asian leagues, with players from the country increasingly making significant contributions across South Korea, Japan, China and the Middle East.
For the former Sabah star, the transfer to Gangwon FC presents a fresh opportunity to showcase his talents in one of Asia’s most competitive leagues and add another successful chapter to his career.
