Nigeria international Sadiq Umar has admitted he is considering retiring from the Super Eagles following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The striker made the revelation during an interview with Radio France International Hausa, explaining that he has yet to make a final decision and will reassess his future with the national team when the new season gets underway.
“I am thinking of retiring from the Nigerian national team, but I will make the final decision when the new season begins,” Sadiq said.
World Cup Disappointment Still Hurts
Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been one of the biggest disappointments in African football, with the Super Eagles missing out on a place at the tournament despite boasting one of the continent’s most talented squads.
While Sadiq declined to identify the reasons behind the failed qualification campaign, he insisted the team must now look ahead and begin preparations for the next World Cup cycle.
“I can’t really mention the cause of our failure, but that is behind us now. We just need to focus on the next World Cup, which will be in four years,” he added.
The 28-year-old’s comments reflect the sense of frustration that has surrounded the national team since their qualification hopes came to an end.
Sadiq Addresses His Recent Absence
The striker also spoke about his absence from recent Super Eagles squads, suggesting that fierce competition for places could be one of the reasons.
“I was not called up. Maybe my profile is not the type they need, and there are other players doing well in the team because, as you know, Nigeria is blessed with abundant talent,” he said.
Nigeria currently boasts a wealth of attacking options, with players such as Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Ademola Lookman and Tolu Arokodare all competing for places in the national team.
Despite his absence, Sadiq insisted there is no bitterness and acknowledged the depth of talent available to the Super Eagles.
Career Longevity a Key Consideration
Asked whether age and motivation would influence his decision, Sadiq explained that he wants to carefully consider what is best for his long-term career.
“There is still time for me to make the final decision on that. That is why I said I will wait for the new season to start before I decide, so I can think about what will help me focus on my career and last in football like Cristiano Ronaldo.”
The reference to Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo suggests the striker is keen to prolong his playing career and is weighing whether stepping away from international football could help him maintain his fitness and performance at club level.
Uncertain Future With the Super Eagles
For now, Sadiq’s international future remains uncertain.
The former Nigeria Olympic team star has represented the Super Eagles at major tournaments and has been part of the national team’s setup for several years. However, the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 World Cup appears to have prompted a period of reflection.
Whether he eventually decides to retire or continue representing Nigeria, Sadiq’s comments have added another talking point to the ongoing discussions surrounding the future direction of the Super Eagles following their World Cup disappointment.
A final decision is expected once the new season begins.
