Folarin Temitope strike hands Ikorodu a crucial 1-0 win, tightening Nigeria Premier League championship race.

Ikorodu City pulled off a sensational 1-0 victory over Rivers United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, dramatically reshaping the Nigeria Premier Football League title race.
After a goalless first half where both sides tested each other’s defenses, the deadlock was broken in the 52nd minute. Substitute Folarin Temitope capitalised on a rebound from goalkeeper Rashid Owolabi following an initial effort from Salami Farouk to slot home, delivering a decisive impact on his debut.
“Temitope’s immediate impact proved decisive, handing the home side all three points,” PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Ikorodu made tactical changes in the second half, introducing Chinedu Akuvuo and adjusting their midfield and attack to protect the lead, while Rivers United responded with substitutions, bringing on Iyowuna Douglas and Timothy Zachariah, but failed to find an equaliser.
The win moves Ikorodu City to 48 points, overtaking Nasarawa United and Shooting Stars, and positions them in third place, intensifying the race for continental qualification. Rivers United remain top on 51 points, but the gap has narrowed, with Enugu Rangers also on 51 points and unbeaten in their last seven games.
Rivers United will face Niger Tornadoes in their final outstanding game on Thursday, a fixture that could increase the pressure on Finidi George’s side as the championship race enters its closing weeks.
The result at Onikan ensures a thrilling finish to the NPFL season, keeping fans on edge as multiple teams vie for the title.
