Super Eagles goalkeeper sets sights on Morocco-Portugal-Spain tournament following 2026 exit.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has shifted focus to the 2030 World Cup after Nigeria fell short in qualifying for the 2026 edition. Despite the disappointment of missing out on the tournament, Okoye remains optimistic about the team’s chances in the next qualification cycle.
Nigeria narrowly missed an automatic berth during qualifying and failed to progress via the intercontinental playoff after losing to DR Congo on penalties. The Nigeria Football Federation has since contested the result, alleging the use of ineligible players by DR Congo, but FIFA rejected the petition, prompting an impending appeal.
Reflecting on the setback, Okoye told SportyTV:
“National team football is a different kind of football, and if I really had the answer, we might be in the World Cup. But I don’t really know, because of the quality we have. We have great players, top-level players, top characters in the team. Hopefully, we get it done next time.”
The 26-year-old, who missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, expressed the pain of watching from home but remains forward-looking:
“I was watching from home as a supporter, like all the other 200–300 million Nigerians. We deserved to win the Cup, but next year is already the next opportunity for us, and we will do everything to bring it home again.”
Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, Okoye credited his strong Nigerian roots for his international choice, despite representing Germany at youth level:
“I grew up in Germany, but my father was very present in my life, especially in my younger years. So, I keep a lot of Nigeria inside of me, and I’m very proud of it. I always knew I wanted to play for Nigeria… by God’s grace, I made that come true.”
He also highlighted the unwavering support of Nigerians throughout his career:
“It means a lot that Nigerians always support you. From my days at Fortuna Düsseldorf to Rotterdam and now in Udine, they have always been there. I’m very grateful and thankful.”
With the next World Cup approaching in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, Okoye is determined to help the Super Eagles seize the opportunity and write a new chapter in Nigeria’s football history.
