Sports Minister blasts treatment of women’s football ahead of Africa’s top tournament.

South Africa’s Sports Minister has made a bold statement on the ongoing controversy surrounding the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), insisting that the country is far more prepared than Morocco to host the tournament.
Addressing the treatment of women’s football, the Minister criticized Morocco for poor organization and transparency, saying:
“As far as the WAFCON is concerned, we have to be honest, why do they treat women in such a fashion. They would never do that to the men’s game, so why do the women not know what’s happening a month before the tournament starts.”
He went on to emphasize South Africa’s superior infrastructure and readiness:
“We will not be held hostage by Morocco. South Africa’s got much more than Morocco, we are a bigger country with a bigger economy and bigger stadiums, so I’m saying that we are ready to host WAFCON.”
The Minister’s statement underscores growing calls for better treatment and investment in women’s football across Africa, highlighting the disparity in support between men’s and women’s tournaments.
With the WAFCON set to be a major continental showcase, South Africa is positioning itself as a reliable alternative host, citing both logistical advantages and commitment to elevating women’s football.
