Former Super Eagles coach, Jo Bonfrere has criticised Diego Simeone for his tactical decision to substitute Ademola Lookman during Atlético Madrid’s 1–0 defeat to Arsenal FC in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Bonfrere argued that Lookman’s removal early in the second half significantly weakened Atletico’s attacking threat, especially in terms of pace and one-on-one quality, which he believes were crucial to their game plan.
Speaking after the match, he said:
“When Diego Simeone removed Lookman early in the second half, he took away ‘speed’ from the team.”

He added:
“Lookman had pace and was effective in one-on-one situations. But when Simeone decided to take him off in the 57th minute… I knew Atletico Madrid would struggle.”
Simeone replaced Lookman with Nahuel Molina shortly after the restart, as Arsenal held firm following Bukayo Saka’s first-half strike to secure progression to the final.
The result sees Arsenal reach the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in two decades.
Looking ahead, Bonfrere also dismissed Arsenal’s chances of lifting the trophy, suggesting stronger opposition awaits in the final.
A tactical decision under scrutiny as Lookman’s exit becomes a major talking point.
