Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, the NBA franchise confirmed in a heartbreaking statement.
The team expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Clarke as both an exceptional teammate and a respected figure within the Memphis community.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the Grizzlies said in a statement that did not disclose the cause of death.
“Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.”
Emotional tributes from NBA leadership
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also paid tribute, highlighting Clarke’s passion and leadership on and off the court.
“As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit,” Silver said.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”
A promising career cut short
Clarke was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft and quickly made an impact, earning All-Rookie honours in his debut season.
He later signed a four-year, $50 million contract extension in 2022, cementing his importance to the franchise.
However, injuries severely disrupted his recent seasons, limiting his appearances and preventing him from maintaining his early momentum in the league.
NBA world reacts with shock
Clarke’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves across the basketball world, with tributes expected to continue pouring in from players, coaches, and fans globally as the NBA community mourns the loss of one of its promising talents.
