Middlesbrough Appoint Kim Hellberg as New Head Coach

Middlesbrough have named Kim Hellberg as their new head coach on a contract until June 2028, replacing Michael Carrick, who left the club by mutual consent earlier this week after three years in charge.

The 36-year-old Swede arrives from Hammarby IF, where he led the Stockholm club to back-to-back second-place finishes in the Allsvenskan in 2024 and 2025, their best league campaigns in over two decades. Under Hellberg, Hammarby played an attacking, possession-based style, averaging over 60% possession and scoring 82 goals across the two seasons.

Hellberg began his coaching career at IFK Värnamo, guiding them from the third tier to the Allsvenskan for the first time in their history, before joining Hammarby in 2024.

He becomes the first Swedish manager in Championship history and only the second non-British or Irish head coach in Middlesbrough’s history, following Aad de Mos in 1996.

Boro currently sit 11th in the Championship table after 16 games. Hellberg’s first match in charge will be the home fixture against Blackburn Rovers on November 29.
