Mikel Arteta has given a major boost to teenage defender Josh Ogunnaike, promoting him to first-team training ahead of Arsenal FC’s London derby against Fulham FC.
The 18-year-old left-back was spotted training with the senior squad at the Sobha Realty Training Centre in London Colney, as Arteta assessed his options ahead of the crucial fixture. His inclusion comes at a key moment, with Jurrien Timber ruled out due to injury, creating an opportunity in the defensive setup.
Despite being eligible to feature in the Premier League as an U21 player, Ogunnaike is yet to make a matchday squad in the competition. However, his continued involvement in first-team training signals growing trust from the coaching staff.
The London-born fullback, who is of Nigerian descent, joined Arsenal’s renowned Hale End Academy at the age of 13 and is currently in the second year of his scholarship. Known for his attack-minded style, Ogunnaike has enjoyed a strong season, regularly featuring for the development squad despite still being eligible for U18 football.
Meanwhile, Arsenal head into the derby with a chance to strengthen their position at the top of the table. A win over Fulham could see them move six points clear, with title rivals Manchester City set to face Everton later in the week.
A big moment for Ogunnaike — and potentially the first step toward Premier League action.
