The Nigeria Football Federation has handed referee Yakubu Adamu an indefinite suspension following the controversial penalty incident during the NPFL clash between Rangers International FC and Bendel Insurance FC.
According to the NFF Refereeing Development Committee, the suspension takes immediate effect, with the official banned from all football-related activities after his decision was deemed inconsistent with the Laws of the Game.
The controversial moment came during Rangers’ dramatic 2-1 victory at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, where Adamu awarded a penalty that later proved decisive in the outcome of the match.
NFF Reacts Strongly
The committee stated that the referee’s actions “brought the game into disrepute”, prompting swift disciplinary action.
The penalty decision has already sparked heated reactions among fans and clubs, especially with the NPFL title race now reaching its decisive final stage.
Rangers’ victory allowed the Flying Antelopes to remain top of the NPFL table with 65 points, narrowly ahead of Rivers United FC, who sit second with 64 points.
Title Race Set For Final-Day Drama
The title battle is now set for a dramatic conclusion on the final day of the season.
Rangers will travel away to face Ikorodu City FC, while Rivers United host Katsina United FC in Port Harcourt.
With just one point separating both teams, the referee controversy has added even more tension to an already explosive NPFL title race.
