Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau has revealed how Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno almost cancelled the maintenance contract for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium over cost concerns.
Speaking with journalist Osasu Obayiwuana, Gusau explained that he had to personally intervene to stop the decision, warning that it could have serious consequences for Nigerian football infrastructure.
“I had to step in strongly when the current governor of Akwa Ibom State considered cancelling the maintenance contract. His concern was the cost, and he came very close to ending it,” Gusau said.
“I explained to him that such a decision would undermine what previous administrations had achieved and that maintaining the facility properly was essential for Nigerian football. I am pleased he eventually agreed to continue with it.”
Why Uyo remains Nigeria’s key stadium
Gusau stressed that the stadium in Uyo remains Nigeria’s most reliable venue for international matches due to its consistent upkeep and maintenance structure.
The 30,000-capacity Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, built in 2014, currently serves as the main home ground for the Nigeria national football team and is one of only a few Nigerian stadiums approved by CAF for international fixtures.
Importance of proper stadium maintenance
The NFF boss emphasised that sustaining world-class facilities is critical if Nigeria wants to continue hosting major international matches and remain competitive in African football infrastructure standards.
Without proper maintenance, he warned, even top-class stadiums could quickly fall below required CAF standards, affecting national team fixtures and development plans.
