Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of FC Bayern Munich, has openly questioned the appointment of referee João Pinheiro following a controversial UEFA Champions League match.
Dreesen expressed surprise at the official’s relatively limited experience at this level, stating:
“It’s astonishing, to say the least, that a referee with only 15 Champions League appearances is allowed to officiate such a game.”
He further suggested that the referee’s lack of experience may have influenced key decisions during the match:
“That might explain some of the calls he made today…”
The comments have added to ongoing debates around officiating standards and appointment criteria in elite European competitions.
While UEFA has not responded publicly, such remarks from a senior club executive are likely to draw attention ahead of future fixtures.
Another refereeing controversy adds fuel to Champions League discussions.
