Super Eagles suffer setback in World Cup playoff dispute, but federation pushes forward with fresh action.

FIFA have officially dismissed a petition filed by the Nigeria Football Federation against the DR Congo national football team, dealing a setback to Nigeria’s efforts to challenge their 2026 World Cup playoff elimination.
The complaint stemmed from Nigeria’s defeat on penalties in November 2025, with the NFF questioning the eligibility of certain DR Congo players, particularly those believed to hold dual citizenship, which conflicts with Congolese nationality regulations.
Among the players highlighted were Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, both reportedly holding dual passports.
FIFA Decision and Sanctions
Prior to the ruling, FIFA had already sanctioned both federations for separate disciplinary breaches during the match:
- The NFF were fined 1,000 Swiss francs after fans threw objects onto the pitch.
- DR Congo were fined 5,000 Swiss francs due to the use of laser pointers by supporters.
Despite these findings, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled against Nigeria’s petition, allowing DR Congo to proceed to the next stage of the playoffs.
NFF Responds with Appeal
Reacting to the decision, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi confirmed that the federation has initiated an appeal process.
“We have received the decision… but we are not satisfied… the NFF has immediately commenced the process of appealing,” Sanusi stated.
The appeal now represents Nigeria’s final opportunity to challenge the ruling and potentially revisit the eligibility concerns raised against the Congolese squad.
What Happens Next
With FIFA’s initial verdict standing, DR Congo remain on course for the upcoming playoffs. However, the NFF’s appeal keeps the case alive, with hopes that a review could produce a different outcome.
The situation adds another layer of drama to Nigeria’s World Cup qualification journey, as the federation seeks justice through the sport’s highest governing body, FIFA.
