Nigeria’s Nigeria U-20 women’s national football team are expected to have their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying first-leg clash against Malawi moved from Ikenne to the MKO Abiola Stadium, according to unconfirmed reports.
The development was revealed by the Nigeria Football Federation Director of Communications, Demola Olajire, who confirmed that the switch is strongly being considered.
“There’s a likely chance the game will now take place in Abeokuta… the possibility is very high.”
Although no official reason was given for the proposed relocation, this would not be the first time the Falconets have had to change match venue during the qualifiers.
In a previous round against Senegal, the fixture was moved from Ibadan to Abeokuta due to the poor condition of the pitch, making the Ogun State capital a reliable alternative venue.
The winner over two legs between Nigeria and Malawi will secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Malawi reached this stage after a 6-2 aggregate victory over Guinea-Bissau, while the Falconets progressed with a 3-1 aggregate win over Senegal.
With the final decision yet to be confirmed, attention now shifts to whether Abeokuta will once again host a crucial international women’s football fixture for Nigeria.
