FIFA is reportedly set to block the international switch of Nikita Haikin, putting his hopes of representing Norway national football team at the FIFA World Cup in serious doubt.
According to Norwegian media reports, football’s governing body has informed the Norwegian Football Federation that Haikin does not meet the eligibility requirements tied to residency duration, despite his recent citizenship approval.
The goalkeeper has been one of the standout performers in this season’s UEFA Champions League, registering an astonishing 74 saves in 12 matches, the highest in the competition, during FK Bodø/Glimt’s impressive run to the Round of 16.
Haikin, who holds Russian, Israeli, British, and now Norwegian citizenship, has lived in Norway since 2019 and officially became a Norwegian citizen in April. He has also previously played for Russia at youth level, which further complicates his international eligibility.
The Norwegian FA has confirmed ongoing discussions with FIFA but has not provided a final update on the case.
Under FIFA rules, players switching national teams must meet strict criteria regarding caps, competitive appearances, and residency, with only limited exceptions allowed under revised regulations introduced in 2021.
National team coach Ståle Solbakken had previously suggested Haikin would be considered for selection “like everyone else” following his citizenship approval.
From Champions League hero to international uncertainty — Haikin’s World Cup dream hangs in the balance.
