Carlos Queiroz has announced his first 23-man squad for Ghana national football team ahead of their international friendly against Mexico national football team on May 22.
The match is part of Ghana’s final preparations for the FIFA World Cup, with Queiroz using the fixture as an opportunity to assess depth in his squad.
The Portuguese coach has selected a blend of uncapped players, fringe internationals, and home-based talents, as he continues building his ideal squad for the tournament.
Several key players based in Europe, including Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew, and Inaki Williams, were unavailable due to the match falling outside the official FIFA window.
Among the notable inclusions are debutants such as Augustine Boakye, Paul Reverson, and Joseph Opoku, alongside returning midfielder Majeed Ashimeru and striker Felix Afena-Gyan.
Six Ghana Premier League players also received call-ups, including Salim Adams, Razak Simpson, and goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi, giving local talent a rare opportunity on the international stage.
Queiroz has made it clear that selection is based strictly on performance and merit, with every player given a chance to impress ahead of the final 26-man World Cup squad announcement on June 1.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L of the World Cup alongside England, Panama, and Croatia, with their campaign set to begin in Toronto.
A bold new era under Queiroz begins — and nobody’s place is guaranteed.
