A wave of grief has swept through the football community in both Nigeria and Italy following the tragic death of Emmanuel King Okoye, a 25-year-old midfielder who collapsed during a match in his home country on Wednesday.
Born in 2000, Okoye was visiting family in Nigeria when the incident occurred. According to reports, the young footballer suffered a severe head injury after a heavy collision on the pitch, leading to his sudden collapse. Emergency responders acted swiftly, providing immediate medical attention before rushing him to hospital, but despite their best efforts, Okoye could not be saved.
The tragedy has been deeply felt in Italy, where Okoye spent much of his playing career featuring for several amateur clubs, including Acri, Palmese, Trebisacce, Tricarico Pozzo di Sicar, Campora, San Fili, and Promosport.
Paying tribute to their former player, Canicattini Calcio wrote:
“The Pol.D. City of Canicattini is mourning. Yesterday, April 29, while playing a match in Nigeria – in what was supposed to be a time of peace and family reunion – former Canary striker Emmanuel King Okoye tragically lost his life at the age of just 25.
A former player of Acri and Palmese, Emmanuel wore the Giallorossi jersey in the 2018-2019 season. He distinguished himself with his commitment, integrity, and passion for football.
Now all that remains are memories, from the superlative goal he scored in Mazzarrone to the filial bond that bound him to Massimo Ficara — another angel, just like him, who passed away too soon.
The president, the management, the coaching staff, and all the Canarian athletes join the Okoye family in condolence. Farewell, Emmanuel.”
This heartbreaking loss comes just one week after former Super Eagles striker Michael Eneramo also collapsed and died on the pitch during a local friendly game in Ungwan Yelwa, Kaduna.
May Emmanuel King Okoye’s soul rest in perfect peace. 🕊️
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who knew him.
