WWE sensation Oba Femi (born Isaac Odugbesan) has credited his Nigerian and Yoruba upbringing for shaping his rapid rise in professional wrestling, saying the popular phrase “Naija no dey carry last” plays a key role in his mindset.
The 6’6”, 310-pound powerhouse, who reportedly defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42, says his background in Nigeria instilled resilience, toughness, and confidence needed to succeed on the global stage.
Speaking to CNN, Femi explained how growing up in Nigeria prepared him for elite competition:
“The way the country is structured, if you can make it there, you can survive anywhere… ‘Naija no dey carry last.’”
He also highlighted the influence of his Yoruba heritage on his personality and professionalism:
“You have to bring some element of respect and likability to the table… and that’s one thing Yoruba people are pretty good at.”
Before transitioning fully into wrestling, Femi also had ambitions in athletics, revealing he once aimed for Olympic success.
“I had aspirations to go to the Olympics and win medals, and I achieved some of that to a degree.”
Now one of WWE’s most imposing rising stars, Femi continues to carry his Nigerian identity proudly into the global spotlight.
From Nigeria to WWE — built on resilience, powered by belief.
